“It’s important to affirming human dignity” – Billie Jean King has her say on gender pronouns

The legendary Billie Jean King is known for being quite active on social media. She recently voiced her opinion on gender pronouns via her Twitter handle.

Since 2018, International Pronouns Day has been annually celebrated on the third Wednesday in October. The official website of International Pronouns Day describes that this day “seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace”.

The former tennis star – Billie Jean King took to Twitter and stressed the importance of pronouns and inclusive language. She stated that it may require practice but it’s essential to affirm human dignity. The 78-year-old wrote:

“Pronouns and inclusive language matter. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is not difficult. While it may take practice, it’s important to affirming human dignity. #InternationalPronounsDay”

In singles competition, King won 695 matches and lost only 155, with a win percentage of 81.76. She won 129 titles with 67 of them coming in the Open Era. The former U.S. captain in the Federation Cup won 1 Australian Open title and 1 French Open title. She achieved surreal success at Wimbledon, having bagged 6 titles. In the US Open, she wasn’t far behind as she won 4 titles.

In the doubles circuit, she won 87 matches and lost 37 (as per the WTA website). She won 1 French Open title, 10 Wimbledon titles, and 5 US Open titles.

As far as mixed doubles are concerned, she won 1 Australian Open title, 2 French Open titles, 4 Wimbledon titles, and 4 US Open titles.
