36-year-old Kateryna Bondarenko is a tennis player from Ukraine who turned pro in 2000. She recently won her first singles title in 5 years.
The former world No. 9 in doubles, ended 2022 by crashing out in the first round of an ITF event in the UAE in December. She lost in the finals of the doubles event, partnering with Magdalena Frech from Poland.
2023 began on a great note for Bondarenko. She took part in the ITF event in Thailand that concluded on Sunday. Bondarenko managed to lift the title after dropping just one set throughout the tournament. She was the 8th seed in the event and defeated the likes of Salakthip Ounmuang, Punnin Kovapitukted, Dalila Jakupovic, and Lanlana Tararudee en route to the final.
The experienced campaigner went on to win the final against Valeria Savinykh convincingly in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. This win marked her first singles title triumph in five and a half years. The former Australian Open winner in doubles also had a great run to the finals of the doubles event. However, she along with Hiroko Kuwata lost in straight sets in the final.
Throwback to when Kateryna Bondarenko won the Australian Open
Kateryna Bondarenko has won two singles titles and four doubles titles on the WTA Tour. However, her biggest win came in the 2008 Australian Open.
Kateryna Bondarenko participated in the 2008 Australian Open alongside her elder sister Alona Bondarenko. Alona went on to become her coach as well after retirement.
They went on to win the title by defeating the No.12-seeded pair Victoria Azarenka and Shahar Pe’er, in three sets in the final. The match ended 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in favor of the Ukrainian pair.
