The fifth edition of the Laver Cup is set to take place from 23-25 September at the O2 Arena in London. The squads of both Team World and Team Europe have been announced along with their captains, vice-captains and alternate players. Team Europe have won all the four previous editions of this competition and are the favourites this time as well.
Team Europe’s squad features the ‘Big Four’ – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray – with Norway’s Casper Ruud and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas being the other members. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini has been named as the alternate player in the squad.
While Team Europe have a really strong and experienced squad, Team World are fielding a relatively more young squad. Team World comprises a host of promising youngsters including Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Diego Schwartzman, Alex de Minaur, John Isner and Jack Sock. Tommy Paul has been named as the alternate player in their squad.
The Laver Cup format is such that 12 matches will be played over three days, consisting of nine singles and three doubles ties. All matches will be played in a best-of-three format, with the third set being a 10-point match tie-breaker. Each player must play at least one singles match during the first couple of days. Each match is worth one point on the first day, two points on the second day and three points on the final day. The first team to score 13 points will win the tournament.
On paper, Team Europe look over-whelming favourites although it promises to be an exciting and intense clash. We are predicting a close win for Team Europe.
