Here’s everything you should know about the prize money on offer at the 2023 Laver Cup
The Laver Cup’s sixth edition is scheduled to commence on September 22 and will conclude on September 24. For the first time, this tournament will take place in Canada, specifically in Vancouver.
Notably, prominent players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray will be absent from this year’s competition. Nevertheless, the event will feature several other high-caliber players. In total, there will be 15 participants, evenly distributed between six for Team Europe, six for Team World, and three alternates spread across both teams.
Team Europe boasts an impressive lineup, featuring four players ranked in the Top-10: Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, and Casper Ruud. Joining them are Hubert Hurkacz and Gael Monfils, under the guidance of Captain Bjorn Borg, with Arthur Fils serving as Team Europe’s alternate player.
In contrast, Team World has only one player in the Top-10, Taylor Fritz. The rest of their squad includes Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, and Francisco Cerundolo, with the latter two making their debut in the Laver Cup. Christopher Eubanks and Milos Raonic serve as alternates for Team World, under the leadership of Captain John McEnroe.
The Laver Cup follows a specific format, consisting of three singles matches and a doubles match each day of the tournament. The point system varies: on the first day, each win is worth one point, on the second day, it’s worth two points, and on the final day, a win earns three points for the team. This structure adds an exciting dynamic to the competition as it progresses. .
What is the prize money on offer at Laver Cup 2023?
The prize money system for the Laver Cup stands out for its simplicity compared to other major tennis tournaments. The total prize pool for all 12 competing players in the tournament is $2,250,000, with each player receiving an equal share of $250,000. This distribution marks a departure from the previous edition where the prize money for the winning team differed from that of the runners-up.
In the 2022 edition of the Laver Cup, each member of the winning team earned $250,000 (£220,360), while the runners-up received $125,000 (£110,175) each.
Additionally, all players in this year’s event will receive an appearance fee based on their current world ranking, although these specific figures are not disclosed to the public. It’s worth noting that despite being an ATP-sanctioned event since 2019, participating players do not earn any world ranking points from their performance in the Laver Cup.
