Leylah Fernandez rose to fame during the 2021 US Open. She lost the final to fellow teenager Emma Raducanu, however on her way to the final she caused a lot of major updates. Fernandez defeated a lot of top players in her journey to the final including defending champion Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina and Angelique Kerber. The Canadian is currently ranked no. 21 in the world.
The Monterrey Open final lasted almost 3 hours. While 19-year old Fernandez was looking to defend her title, Osorio was aiming for her 2nd WTA career title. Fernandez lost the first set in tie break before clinching the second one relatively comfortable. All the drama was saved for the third and deciding set. To add to the drama, play was suspended for 15 minutes due to a power outage at a crucial point in the third set.
Osorio broke Fernandez’s serve twice to start the final set and take a solid 4-1 lead. Fernandez came back strong to finally level it 4-4 just when it appeared she is done and dusted. The Canadian went down 4-5 but survived a match point to drag the match further. The clash reached its climax when Fernandez losing 6-5, survived three match points before play was paused due to the outage. Fernandez held her nerves to eventually clinch the set and the match after the resumption of play. This victory means Fernandez has now won her last 10 matches at the Monterrey Open. She has clearly dominated the tournament over the last two years winning it on both occasions.
