Madison Brengle progressed to the second round of the Tennis in the Land tournament in Cleveland after edging out Varvara Gracheva in a closely-fought encounter.
American Madison Brengle and Varvara Gracheva locked horns at Cleveland’s Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank in the round of 64. Brengle won the match 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the next round.
The World No. 63 showed nerves of steel as she saved six match points in the third set. The Russian Gracheva will be disappointed for not having finished the game off even after getting multiple chances. It’s not every day that you see a player save as many as six match points to end up on the winning side.
Brengle was down 3-5 in the third set but the resurgence began in the nick of time.
Who will Madison Brengle face next at the WTA Cleveland Open 2022?
The home favorite Madison Brengle will have her task cut out as she takes on the third seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 16 of the WTA Cleveland Open.
The 27-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Lauren Davis in the first round 4–6, 6-2, 6-4. The Russian has a lethal serve, and she pulled off 11 aces in the match. The serve isn’t the strong suit for Brengle as she is the WTA player with the lowest aces per match rate in 2022.
The veteran Madison Brengle will have to bring her A-game as the 2022 Libema Open champion will start as the favorite on paper.
