“Hope Mr Rushdie will be ok” – Martina Navratilova has her fingers crossed as prominent author Salman Rushdie is stabbed in New York

Mumbai-born author Salman Rushdie was stabbed by a 24-year-old New Jersey man named Hadi Matar in New York – tennis legend Martina Navratilova was among the many who sent out a tweet hoping for the well-being of the 75-year-old.

Salman Rushdie was a guest speaker at a local literary festival in Chautauqua, in Upstate New York. After stabbing, Rushdie was flown to UPMC Hamot Surgery Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he underwent surgery. Andrew Wylie, Rushdie’s agent, said the writer was on a ventilator with a damaged liver, severed nerves in an arm and an eye he was likely to lose.

The New York State Police, which is investigating the attack prior to a speaking event at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, said that on Friday the Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey for “attempted murder 2nd degree and assault 2nd degree”.

As far as mixed doubles events in Grand Slams are concerned, Navratilova won 10 Grand Slam titles.
