Russian Daniil Medvedev bows out of French Open against Stefano Tsitsipas
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev hit out at the organisers of Roland Garros after his straight- set loss to Stefano Tsitsipas.
Medvedev lost to Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6(3), 7-5, who will now face Alexander Zverev for a place in the final.
“Our match was definitely the match of the day, so Roland Garros preferred Amazon to people. It’s easy as that.”
Tournament director Guy Forget earlier spoke about the deal struck with Amazon to switch the match to the late-night slot. This was in the aftermath of the COVID-19 restrictions in Paris.
Medvedev compared the situation to the Australian GP in 2020, which was scheduled to go ahead despite the rise in cases.
“When the pandemic started, they were in Australia ready to race and they asked Lewis Hamilton what he thought about racing in the conditions the world was in right now. He said, ‘I don’t know what we are doing here’. So they asked him, ‘Why do you think they make you race?’ He said ‘Cash is King’,” Medvedev went on a lengthy rant.
The Greek avenged his semi-final loss at the Australian Open earlier this year. He has won every quarter final in a Grand Slam in his career. Meanwhile, Zverev maintained his strong clay court campaign with a quarter-final win over Davidovich Fokina. He is set to face Tsitsipas in a mouthwatering clash in the other half.
Tsitsipas holds an edge in their previous meetings 5-2. However, their last meeting on clay went the way of the Greek supremo.
The two have become on of the heavyweights in the top-10 in recent years. It will be really hard to pick a winner to reach their first ever final at Roland Garros.
Prediction: Zverev in four sets
