Daniil Medvedev recounts a funny incident when he angered Andrey Rublev by calling him Jannik Sinner.
Australian Open 2021 finalist and world no.2 Daniil Medvedev has been putting in the hard yards ahead of Roland Garros 2021. The 25-year old is yet to win a match at the French Open, having participated in the Grand Slam a ridiculous four times.
But, he has had a considerable amount of success in other clay-court competitions and will be hoping to put it to effect in Paris this time around.
He recently recounted a hilarious incident with fellow Russian Andrey Rublev during the Australian Open. He revealed how Rublev used to get annoyed if someone called him Jannik; referring to young Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner (who has a similar hairdo).
He then went on to state how he called Rublev, Jannik in a locker room during the Australian Open, and the reply the young Russian came up with almost 10 minutes later.
Medvedev was quoted as saying:
“I remember a funny story. It was during the Australian Open. Andrey gets really really angry if you call him Jannik, because he looks like Sinner a little bit. During this, he comes into the locker room and I say, ‘Hi Jannik! How are you?’ And, he gets angry and goes away for 10 minutes, comes back 10 minutes later and says, ‘You are Davydenko [Nikolay] then’.”
Sinner and Rublev met at the Quarter-final of the ongoing Barcelona Open. The 11th seeded Sinner had no troubles as he eased past the number 3 seeded Russian in straight sets (6-2, 7-6) to advance to the Semi-final.
Barring Cameron Norrie, the rest of the names left in the Barcelona Open are ranked above Sinner, which includes, notably – Rafael Nadal.
The youngest quarter-finalist in the French Open since Novak Djokovic in 2006, might be looking to go all the way in Barcelona, which will boost his momentum going into the Roland Garros.
