Monica Seles is a nine-time Grand Slam Champion, who has represented both Yugoslavia and the United States in women’s tennis. The former WTA World no.1 officially retired from Tennis in 2008 and is considered to be one of the all-time legends of the sport. In her illustrious career, Seles has won the Australian Open four times, the French Open three times, and the US Open two times, all contributing to her tally of 59 career titles.
Seles started her career on a thoroughly promising note. In 1990, Seles became the youngest-ever French Open champion at 16. She won eight Grand Slam singles titles before her 20th birthday and was the year-end No. 1 in 1991 and 1992. However, her incredible run was brought to a tragic halt when a fan stabbed her in the back with a knife, while she was on a tennis court. She returned to professional tennis two years after the attack but could not replicate her sublime touch from her early years.
Experts believe Seles had the potential to become one of the most accomplished female players of all time had she not been stabbed. The popular magazine named her one of the “30 Legends of Women’s Tennis: Past, Present and Future” – Time. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009.
