We are in the business end of the Monte Carlo Masters 2022 and a lot of exciting matches are in store in the men’s singles draw. Here’s the preview, predictions, head to head stats and more
Taylor Fritz is in sublime touch this year. The reigning Indian Wells Champion has entered this tournament as the 10th seed and is coming off convincing victories against top players like Marin Cilic and Sebastian Korda in the previous rounds. Fritz’s opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has been the surprise package of this tournament. The Spaniard pulled off a stunning victory against the top seed Novak Djokovic and followed it up with a straight sets victory over David Goffin.
The two players have faced each other only once before on the ATP professional tour and Fokina came out on top on that occasion in 2019. We are expecting an intense clash with Fritz eventually winning it in the third set.
Hurkacz is the 11th seed in the tournament and has secured comfortable victories against Pedro Martinez and Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his previous two rounds. The Polish star has been pretty consistent in 2022 and will look to continue his impressive run. Meanwhile, Grigor Dimitrov caused a major upset in the previous round. The Bulgarian defeated 4th seed and Miami Open finalist Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.
Dimitrov and Hurkacz have faced each other only once before in the ATP senior circuit. Dimitrov came out on top on that occasion at the Indian Wells Masters in 2021 and leads 1-0 on head to head. However, Hurkacz is the favourite going into the match as the superior seed and despite Dimitrov’s good form, we predict a comprehensive straight-sets win for Hubert Hurkacz.
Sinner versus Zverev promises to be the most high-voltage clash of the quarter-finals draw in men’s singles. Alexander Zverev defeated Federico Delbonis and 13th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in his previous matches while Jannik Sinner is coming off a thrilling three-set victory over 5th seed Andrey Rublev.
The players have faced each other three times before on the the ATP tour. Zverev leads 2-1 on head to head and won their most recent meeting at the US Open in 2021. The German is the favourite going into the match both in terms of rankings and head to head records but given the current form, we are predicting a win in three sets for Jannik Sinner.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is set to face 12th seed Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. The Greek would look to continue his impressive run in Monte Carlo. Tsitsipas followed up his straight-sets victory against Fabio Fognini in the first round with another comfortable win against Laslo Dere in the previous round. The Greek is seeded no.3 in the tournament and is definitely living up to the expectations. However, this will be Tsitsipas’ first encounter against a seeded player in the tournament and he can certainly expect a tough challenge.
Schwartzman reached the finals of the Rio Open earlier this year and has been impressive so far in Monte Carlo. The Argentine defeated Lorenzo Musetti, Marton Fucsovics and Karen Khachanov in his previous round matches. Interestingly, Schwartzman leads Tsitsipas 2-1 on head to head record and won their latest meeting in the 2022 ATP Cup. However, we believe Tsitsipas’ quality will be too good for Schwartzman on this occasion and the Greek should win comfortably in straight sets.
