Naomi Osaka posted an emotional message after a video was played in the 2020 US Open
Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has been one of the biggest voices in the support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
The US has been gripped in a long protest as several black people have been killed in police shootings. Protests have taken place across the country and many sportspeople have raised their voices too.
The NBA has taken a strong stance against the injustice towards blacks and minorities in the US and all stars are wearing special jerseys to support the movement.
There were a few games that were postponed too as the NBA decided if the Playoffs were to continue or not.
Osaka, for her part, has spoken openly about the problems in the country and has also worn masks of those killed in shootings by the police and others.
Two of those names are Trayvon Martin and Ahmaud Arbery. Osaka has worn face masks before and after her US Open games as she continues voicing her concerns.
The parents of Martin and Arbery shared their responses to the work done by Osaka as she defeated Shelby Rogers.
The 22-year-old was left touched with this message and was just happy that she could make a difference.
After her @USOpen match tonight, @ESPN showed @NaomiOsaka video messages from @SybrinaFulton, mother of #TrayvonMartin, and Marcus Arbery, father of #AhmaudArbery — two of the five names she's worn on masks before and after her matches. #SayTheirNames pic.twitter.com/1BOyzQbzg9

“Cried so much”
Osaka couldn’t say much after this video was played but she did post an update a little later.
The former US Open champion claimed that after watching this video again, she broke down and praised the strength of the two parents in question:
I often wonder if what I’m doing is resonating and reaching as many people as I hope. That being said, I tried to hold it in on set but after watching these back I cried so much. The strength and the character both of these parents have is beyond me. Love you both, thank you ❤️ https://t.co/FSDLtWNJDr

Osaka will continue to wear the masks as she sets up a semi-final against Jennifer Brady. Osaka’s form had dipped a bit since she won back-to-back slams. However, this is her best performance in a major event since she won the Australian Open in 2019.
