Naomi Osaka cruised past the first round at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Representing her home country in her own backyard, world no.2 women’s tennis sensation Naomi Osaka ran through Zheng Saisai in the first round at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Osaka had a difficult few months coming into the 2020 Olympics. She withdrew from the 2021 French Open, while the tournament was already underway, due to a tussle with the press and media. She pulled out of the 2021 Wimbledon as well, while confirming that she would take part in the Olympics.
However, things began brightly for her at the Olympics, starting with the torch lighting which is considered to be one of the greatest honours.
Brimming with confidence and patriotism, Osaka took on Saisai of China. The Japanese steamrolled Saisai 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets to cruise to the second round.
Following her victory, Osaka posted a GIF of herself claiming a point (probably an ace), and ecstatically celebrating.
Naomi Osaka faces Viktorija Golubic next
Having coasted past Saisai, Naomi Osaka will be facing Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland next. The 28-year old is ranked 48 in the world, which is her career highest as well.
Golubic is coming off a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in the first round. A similar scoreline to Naomi Osaka (6-1, 6-4).
The match is scheduled to take place on the 26th of July at 7:30 am. Osaka will be looking forward to dismantling the Swiss and continue her quest for Olympic Gold.
