New videos of ‘”missing” Peng Shuai surfaces after global outcry

An editor-in-chief of state newspaper the Global Times in China has released fresh videos of former tennis star Peng Shuai, who went missing after she made an allegation against a former Chinese politician a fortnight ago.

The latest footage shows that the tennis star is being introduced at a youth tennis match in Beijing. The editor, Hu Xijin,  said on Twitter, which is banned in the country, that the video is from Sunday. However, there is no proof of the authenticity of the latest video.

A Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) spokesperson speaking about the video said that it’s not sufficient proof of tennis’ star well being.

“This video alone is insufficient. As I have stated from the beginning, I remain concerned about Peng Shuai’s health and safety and that the allegation of sexual assault is being censored and swept under the rug. I have been clear about what needs to happen and our relationship with China is at a crossroads.”

What really happened to Peng Shuai?

Peng Shuai is missing after the allegations

Former doubles World No.1, Peng was not heard from since she claimed on Chinese social media on November 2 that former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli had forced her into a sexual relationship.

The claims, made on the Chinese social media site Weibo, were quickly taken down as well and since then Peng Shuai’s whereabouts have been a mystery.

Zhang is a retired politician who served as the Senior Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China between 2013 and 2018 and as a member of the Chinese Communist Party Politburo Standing Committee.
