Nick Kyrgios expressed his displeasure with the ATP’s decision to go ahead with the 2020 US Open
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has slammed the ATP for going ahead with plans of holding the US Open despite the country going through the coronavirus pandemic and widespread anti-racism protests.
US currently tops the list of worst coronavirus hit countries in the world and has recently witnessed a lot of riots following the death of George Floyd. According to Kyrgios, the ATP’s decision to conduct the 2020 US Open amidst such turmoil seems a little selfish.
“The ATP is trying to make the US Open go ahead. Selfish with everything going on at the moment. Obviously COVID, but also with the riots, together we need to overcome these challenges before tennis returns in my opinion,” Kyrgios tweeted on his official page.
Kyrgios even issued a notice to the ‘Big Three’ of tennis – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, asking them about their opinions on the US Open.
The ATP suspended all tennis activities since mid-March. This saw the 2020 Wimbledon Championships being cancelled and the French Open postponed respectively. However, the ATP has given a green signal for the US Open, with the main draw starting on August 31.
Djokovic also expresses reservations
Meanwhile, Kyrgios was not the only star to express reservations regarding the US Open. Novak Djokovic had hinted on Wednesday that he might skip this year’s US Open and restart his season on clay in Europe by early September.
“Nothing is certain yet, a final decision is expected by the end of the month,” Djokovic commented while speaking to Serbian broadcaster RTS.
The US Open organisers have drawn up a list of hygiene rules, including a 14-day quarantine period for players arriving in the US.
They have also restricted a player’s entourage to just a single person. Djokovic added that most of the players whom he had contacted regarding the issue also had voiced a negative opinion.
