Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios had the most heated and controversial match of this year’s Wimbledon tournament.
The two talented players faced each other in the third round. Tsitsipas won a closely-contested first set, but Kyrgios won the next three sets to eventually win the tie. The Australian has been bashed throughout the tournament for using strong language and aggression.
Kyrgios argued with the officials in the opening set of the match and even called for a “new referee”. This is not the first time the 27-year-old has been criticized for arguing with the officials and sometimes with his opponent.
Tsitsipas also lost his cool and hit a ball into the Court One stands. The Greek star was fined $10,000 for his antics while his third-round opponent was fined $4,000 for an audible obscenity.
Who will Nick Kyrgios face in the Round of 16?
Nick Kyrgios has reached the quarter-final of Wimbledon on one occasion in his career. That came in 2014. He will be able to repeat the feat if he manages to oust Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 16.
Brandon Nakashima is just 20 years old and is playing his second Wimbledon competition. He faced defeat in the first round in 2021 at the most prestigious tennis tournament of the year. However, he has overcome the odds and reached the Round of 16 with impressive wins over Nicola Kuhn, Denis Shapalov, and Daniel Elahi Galan.
As far as the head-to-head score is concerned, it stands at 0-0 because Kyrgios and Nakashima have not faced each other previously. The more-experienced Kyrgios will go into the match as the overwhelming favorite, but we have seen too many upsets this year, and ruling out the chance of one more will not be a smart call.
