Nick Kyrgios is currently recovering from a knee injury which forced him to withdraw from last month’s Australian Open – John McEnroe recently stated that Tennis needs characters like Kyrgios.
Tennis legend John McEnroe believes that the sport of Tennis needs more expressive characters like Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios is one of the most controversial figures in the current Tennis circuit but there is no denying the fact that he is an entertainer on and off the court. While most fans and members of the Tennis fraternity have always been critical of Kyrgios’ behaviour and antics on court, the Australian does have his fair share of supporters.
In a recent interview, McEnroe stated: “I’d like to see a little bit more explosive temper, see the emotions. Last year Elena Rybakina won in Wimbledon, but she didn’t show any emotion.” McEnroe himself loved to express himself on the court and it’s evident that he prefers watching drama unfold on the court besides just quality Tennis action. There is no doubt that Kyrgios leads the charts when it comes to creating a scene on the court and it’s the same reason, he is one of the most hated players in the circuit. However, a certain section of fans seems to love Kyrgios for these very same reasons and McEnroe appears to be one of them.
Let us take a look at some of the reactions from fans on Twitter.
“So we need more players who can’t control their tempers and are often abusive off the court as well? No thanks! Disgusted quite frankly”, wrote a fan who clearly doesn’t agree with McEnroe.
“Tennis needs to have players who can be theirselves. Rybakina seems to be a calm, wonderful, kind person so let her be just that and let her celebrate however she wants. Both her and Kyrgios are great personalities for a diverse world of tennis”, another fan summed it up beautifully.
“No tennis doesn’t need abusers”, read a tweet from a critical fan.
“So is this McEnroe’s dream team for an exhibition… Kyrgios, Bublik, Zverev, Djokovic, Ostapenko”, joked another fan.
Another fan wrote: “There is a difference between explosive temper and being a crybaby.”
