Novak Djokovic saw his name drop down 4 places in the ATP rankings despite winning the 2022 Wimbledon
Serbian Novak Djokovic was a strong favorite to retain the title but an in-form Rafael Nadal would have certainly given him a good run for his money. However, once the Spaniard had to pull out of the tournament ahead of the semi-final owing to an abdominal injury, it was almost certain that Djokovic would notch up his 21st Grand Slam triumph.
It is one thing to be the favorite on paper and to end up winning is an entirely different. Djokovic’s fans did have their share of tense moments. The veteran lost the first two sets of his quarter-final clash with Jannik Sinner. However, the experienced pro brought his A-game to win the next three sets.
Djokovic also lost the first set of both his semi-final and final matches. He did not get too perturbed and came out victorious in four sets in both matches.
Unfortunately, Djokovic ended up dropping by 4 spots and now is No. 7 in the rankings as ATP decided to not award points for the prestigious tournament. This was ATP’s reply to Wimbledon officials banning Russian and Belarusian players from participating in this year’s tournament. Wimbledon had announced before the tournament that Russian and Belarusian players would not be allowed to participate in this year’s tournament as a kind of punishment for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The talented Stefanis Tsitsipas was ousted by eventual runner-up Nick Kyrgios in a heated third-round match. There was no love lost between the two players during and after the match which ended 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in favor of the Australian.
The Greek took to Twitter and wrote: “Always remember to congratulate the champion who sacrificed tremendously for sports. Congratulations @DjokerNole on this flawless triumphant run! Well deserved”
