Nick Kyrgios didn’t leave an opportunity to troll Megan Rapinoe – here’s what the Australian had to say
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios and Piers Morgan have found common ground regarding a video featuring Megan Rapinoe. The Australian athlete has aligned with Piers Morgan in critiquing Megan Rapinoe, a prominent women’s football player, due to a viral video that recently resurfaced on social media.
Rapinoe and her teammates from the USA faced elimination from the Women’s World Cup, experiencing a penalty shootout loss to Sweden. Although Rapinoe, aged 38, had limited playing time in this year’s tournament, she was a notable figure in the sport four years ago, playing a significant role in the USA’s World Cup victory.
During the ESPYS Awards in 2019 in Los Angeles, Rapinoe had become the center of attention due to her actions. Caught on video, she failed to acknowledge a fan who had approached her. Although she signed the young fan’s football, she avoided making eye contact and even turned her gaze away when returning the ball.
Back then, Piers Morgan criticized her as being “arrogant,” and the recent resurgence of the footage reignited his frustration. On Twitter, he commented, “Doesn’t even look at him,” and labeled her behavior as “Diabolical arrogance.” This time, former Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios jumped into the discussion by quoting Morgan’s tweet and humorously adding, “Hahahahahaha one thing me and Piers agree on.”
The U.S. Women’s Soccer team has been eliminated from the 2023 World Cup after a tense penalty shootout loss to their rivals, Sweden. The dramatic shootout concluded with Sweden winning 5-4. Both teams struggled with their penalty kicks, as several players failed to hit the target, including Megan Rapinoe, a key player for Team U.S.
This is likely to be Rapinoe’s final appearance in a Team U.S. jersey during an international competition, as she has announced her intention to retire at the end of this season. The defeat to Sweden and Rapinoe’s departure mark a turning point, as 14 of the current USWNT players made their first World Cup appearances in this tournament, signaling a period of transformation for the team.
The U.S. team struggled to convert their abundant possession into valuable goals, a pattern that persisted throughout the competition. This trend has defined their performance in the tournament.
For many years, the USWNT has held a firm grip on international soccer, consistently leading the global rankings. However, as their star players have grown older and other nations, particularly in Europe, have invested in their women’s national teams, the USWNT’s position as a dominant favorite has become less certain.
