The WTA hasn’t yet announced the venue for the season-ending finale – Ons Jabeur is very “frustrated”
With most of the tennis season already passed, the location for the WTA Finals remains uncertain, causing visible frustration for Ons Jabeur. Recently, Elena Rybakina criticized the WTA leadership for its lack of strength, and although some found her comments surprising, evidence of inefficiency is readily apparent. The WTA has yet to disclose the venue for the upcoming WTA Finals, even though the event is only about 60 days away.
This limited timeframe is causing significant concern, particularly for players like Jabeur, who might participate in the tournament. Jabeur expressed her frustration during the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. Although the event is contractually linked to Shenzen, due to the pandemic and the situation surrounding Peng Shuai, the event was held in Guadalajara and Forth Worth instead of China.
The latter occurrence was notably unpleasant as there was a lack of attendance. Even with reduced ticket prices, the impact was minimal, highlighting the puzzling choice of location. The city lacked a tennis tradition, underscoring the evident incompetence in decision-making.
“Yeah, honestly, it’s frustrating. I don’t know what’s happening and why we don’t know yet. We are waiting. I heard a few cities. I’m not sure where. Some, they say Saudi. I’m not sure. It could be a great option for myself, to be honest with you“, said Jabeur.
Details about potential destinations for players remain scarce, and in Jabeur’s case, she must first secure her qualification. Making it to the quarter-finals in Cincinnati is a positive step, yet further achievements will be necessary.
Jabeur further added that she needs to meet the criteria initially and then evaluate. Nonetheless, she hopes the WTA can make a decision promptly, enabling fans and players to determine the direction. This would prevent empty stadiums and allow the promotion of the WTA Finals as swiftly as possible.
