Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, enjoyed a phenomenal season on the WTA Tour this year. She is enjoying the off-season by watching her nation’s football team compete at the ongoing football world cup.
We already have got 10 pre-quarterfinalist in the football world cup so far with six more spots up for grabs. Tunisia was placed in group D alongside France, Australia, and Denmark. The North African country drew its first match against Denmark and lost to Australia in the following encounter.
Tunisia faced defending champions France in its final match of the group stage. France had already progressed through to the knockouts after defeating Australia and Denmark in its first two matches. The European nation chose to rest a few of its key players like Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, and Olivier Giroud, to name a few. Tunisia pulled off a huge upset as they defeated France 1-0.
France and Australia progressed from the group but Tunisia finished third and can be proud of their efforts in the competition. Wimbledon and US Open finalist, Ons Jabeur was present at the Education City Stadium in Ar-Rayyan, Qatar to watch the match between Tunisia and France. She would be disappointed not to see Tunisia progress further in the world event but the win against the defending champions would certainly make her feel good.
The 28-year-old had a splendid season that ended with her disappointing WTA Finals campaign, where she failed to progress to the knockouts.
The Tunisian No. 1 won 47 matches this season and lost just 17 with a win percentage of 73.44. She bagged a couple of titles – the Madrid Open and the Berlin Open.
Jabeur earned prize money of $4,997,069 during the year and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 2 for the first time on 27 June 2022. She reclaimed the No. 2 spot in the rankings on 12 September 2022.
