Patrick McEnroe backs Rafael Nadal to win three more French Open titles

According to Express, Patrick McEnroe believes Rafael Nadal could win up to three more French Open titles if he recovers well and stays fit in coming years.

Nadal, 35, is a record 13-time French Open champion but he failed to win the title at Roland Garros this year. The Spaniard has barely played since he suffered a shock semi-final defeat at the hands of Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion ended his 2021 season early as he was recovering from injury.

He withdrew from Wimbledon and the Olympics, later revealing that he was left unable to play tennis for 20 days after aggravating a foot injury during his loss on the clay courts of Paris. He also missed the final Grand Slam of the year – US Open.

Now McEnroe has predicted that the World No. 6 can still win multiple Roland Garros titles in his comeback:

“If he stays healthy, he could end up winning one to three more French Opens.”

“That’s a reasonable argument to make. It’s harder to make an argument that he can win multiple other majors at this point.”

Nadal has officially confirmed that he is all set to return to the court. Nadal has joined the likes of Emma Raducanu and Dominic Thiem at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, a three-day exhibition tournament going to take place in Abu Dhabi.

Nadal will be taking to the courts of Abu Dhabi on December 16, where he is a five-time champion.

Nadal will see this tournament to build on his fitness ahead of next year’s Australian Open, which is scheduled to start on January 17. Defending champion Novak Djokovic’s participation in the tournament is still in the air.

Djokovic previously admitted he was unsure whether he would compete in January’s Australian Open because he has still not taken Covid 19 jabs. The Australian government is looking to impose a vaccine mandate, only allowing players who are fully vaccinated into the country.
