Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai has accused former Vice President of China Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault

One of the most prominent names in Tennis out of China Peng Shuai has recently made headlines for exposing former Vice President of China Zhang Gaoli of sexual assualt. Shuai made the allegations in a post on November 2nd. The post was made on Weibo, China’s counter part of Twitter.

As reported by The Week, in the post she claimed that she was sexually assaulted by Gaoli, which set of an on and off relationship between the two. The post was taken down by Weibo within minutes but had already spread like wildfire. Gaoli was the Vice President of China from 2013 to 2018 and was the part of the top ruling body in China.

The post also claimed that Shuai was abandoned by the former Vice President after seven years of extramarital relationship. However, Shuai does not have any evidence to prove the validity of her claims.

It is noted that the allegations made by Shuai was the highest public MeToo allegation ever made in China. Although the post has been taken down the people have took notice of the accusations. The Chinese media, however, has been censoring everything related to Shuai at the moment.

What happens next in the case?

With the lack of evidence to prove the validity of the claims, Shuai finds herself in a tricky situation. The tennis player will now face a lot of political and also social burden to prove her claims are true. If not then she can face a lot of criticism for making false allegations against the former Vice President.
