The sudden demise of Queen Elizabeth II has caused a huge void in The Royal family. The tennis world has sent its heartfelt condolences to the family and the people of the United Kingdom in their moment of sorrow.
Queen Elizabeth II made four visits to Wimbledon over the years. Her last visit to the All-England Club was in 2010. However, in this article, we will look back at her first appearance at the grass-court major.
She awarded the Venus Rosewater Dish to the legendary Althea Gibson. The American tennis star won the singles title, and the doubles title, and narrowly missed out on the mixed doubles title after reaching the final.
The Venus Rosewater Dish is the Ladies’ Singles Trophy awarded at the Wimbledon Championships and was first presented to the champion in 1886. English tennis legend Blanche Bingley was the first won to win the award.
We witnessed a memorable fairytale story that had a perfect ending at Wimbledon this year. The 23-year-old Elena Rybakina stunned the tennis world with exhilarating performances to win the tournament.
Russian-born, Kazakhstan Rybakina has been playing for Kazakhstan since 2018. She became the nation’s first player ever–male or female–to win a Grand Slam, taking home the coveted Venus Rosewater Dish and US$2.39 million in prize money.
Rybakina defeated the likes of Coco Vandeweghe, Bianca Andreescu, Qinwen Zheng, Petra Martic, Ajla Tomljanovic, Simona Halep, and Ons Jabeur to win her first major title.
