Rafael Nadal put on a clinical display in the final of the 2020 Mexico Open as he won with ease.
His opponent, Taylor Fritz, barely laid a hand on the 19-time Grand Slam winner. This was Nadal’s third crown at Acapulco and he didn’t even lose a set in the tournament.
However, it could have been a different story had Nick Kyrgios remained fit for the competition.
The Australian has struggled with a problem and had to pull out while playing his first game in the tournament.
Nadal, for his part, bounced back from exiting the Australian Open to Dominic Thiem. He didn’t drop a set in the tournament and also created a couple of unique records.
Nadal has now won an ATP tournament in each of the last 17 years and is also the youngest and oldest ever winner of the Mexico Open.
Although the Spaniard hasn’t dominated Acapulco throughout his career, he did call it his home and posted an incredible picture with the title.
It will be interesting to see how the 33-year-old continues playing this season, especially with Roger Federer out for a while.
That should give him a boost as he looks to match Federer’s record of 20 Slams. The Swiss star will miss the French Open after undergoing knee surgery and isn’t expected to return for a while.
Novak Djokovic will be the threat to Nadal for Roland Garros, but some of the next gen players could spring a surprise too.
Winning in Mexico should provide a handy boost to the Spaniard, and he will also be in action during the Indian Wells tournament.
