Rafael Nadal advanced into the final of the Mexico Open with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win against Grigor Dimitrov
Rafael Nadal said that he needed to recover ahead of the final against Taylor Fritz at the Mexico Open.
Nadal advanced into the finals in Mexico after overcoming Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets in the semi-final.
Though the scoreline read a comfortable 6-3, 6-2, Nadal was of the opinion that it was not the case. The 19-time Grand Slam winner said that he needed to recover ahead of his clash against Fritz as he had drained a lot of energy playing against Dimitrov.
“It’s been a good game. I’ve gone from less to more. For me being in the Acapulco final is very important after a while without competing. It’s starting again in the competition with a good feeling after the defeat in the quarters from Australia it’s an injection of morals,” Nadal said.
“I think I’m also playing at a good level. I’m happy for it and for having played against one of the best in the world and with a good level. It’s been a heavy day, in which I lost a lot liquid, now we have to recover for tomorrow because Fritz is playing at a very high level,”
Fritz struggled initially losing his first set before coming from behind to record a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over John Isner.
First-ever ATP meeting
The Acapulco final could bear witness to an interesting clash as it will be the first-ever meeting in the ATP circuit between Nadal and Fritz.
Nadal had a few words of praise for his 22-year old opponent Fritz whom he will face on Sunday.
“He’s playing well. He has a great serve, fantastic shots from the baseline. It’s going to be a tough one,” Nadal said. “I know I’m going to have to be at my best and I hope to be ready for it,” Nadal said.
Nadal is just one win away from a hat-trick of titles at Acapulco having won in 2005 and 2013.
