Reilly Opelka won the ATP doubles title in Atlanta last year but the tall American tennis pro doesn’t seem to like doubles tennis too much.
The 25-year-old Reilly Opelka is quite active on Twitter and doesn’t mince words when he speaks his mind. He recently gave his opinion on doubles tennis and fans of doubles tennis blasted him for his comments.
A fan on Twitter asked Opelka why he doesn’t play doubles tennis. The American tennis pro replied to the tweet saying that there’s too much money in doubles tennis.
“Theres wayyy too much $$ in dubs”
Many fans blasted him for this tweet but Opelka replied to a fan who tweeted in support of his opinion and wrote that doubles players are the most overpaid athletes in the world.
“Dubs players are the most overpaid athletes in the world,” Opelka further wrote.
Opelka feels that doubles tennis is mostly watched in the UK, while fans in other countries tend to watch doubles matches only when star singles players are in action in doubles events.
“They dont sell a single ticket outside of the UK, unless its singles players playing doubles. For example, Indian Wells.”
Reilly Opelka turned pro in 2015. The tallest player on the current ATP circuit has so far won 4 singles titles and 1 doubles title on the tour.
The world No. 38 won his first ATP tour-level singles title in February 2019 at the New York Open. This was the second edition of the indoor hard court tournament.
Opelka defeated fellow American John Isner in the final in a pulsating affair that was decided in the third set. The match ended 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (9-7) in favor of the youngster.
