Is Roger Federer set to return?

Published by

The Swiss Maestro – Roger Federer has shared a clip on Instagram where he is seen practising forehand shots behind closed doors

Roger Federer‘s last appearance in a professional tennis event was at Wimbledon 2021. The Swiss maestro has been out of action for close to a year now and is likely to extend well beyond that. Federer had to undergo two knee surgeries in 2020 after which he made a brief comeback, playing five tournaments before he had to go for a third surgery. However, the recent video uploaded by the tennis ace on social media could be a positive sign that we can see him back at the courts very soon.

Federer has spent most part of the last two years on the sidelines with a right knee injury. The 40-year old ended his 2020 season after the Australian Open to undergo double knee surgery, returning in March 2021 at the ATP 250 event in Doha. Federer played just 5 tournaments before being forced out once again with an injury during his campaign at Wimbledon. Federer announced he would end his season early to have a third knee surgery.

Roger Federer resumed racket training last week

Roger Federer resumed racket training with his wife last week under his coach Severin Luthi’s supervision. Mirka is a former top 100 WTA circuit player. Luthi said, “The main thing for him is to slowly find his feet again. He’s still in the rehabilitation phase. He can always do more, he is actively working. Not only the muscles of the knee or leg are built up but the whole body is strengthened. It’s a real conditioning program.”

Luthi sounds confident that Federer’s rehabilitation program is working well for the athlete. Things are slowly getting back on track for the Swiss maestro although he has not yet resumed hardcore physical work. Federer is in regular contact with his fitness trainer Pierre Paganini and will resume fitness training under his supervision very soon.
