Roger Federer had to give up football at the age of 12 to focus entirely on tennis

Swiss tennis great Roger Federer is a huge fan of FC Basel and was an accomplished footballer during his days as a youngster.

There is no doubt Federer is one of the all-time greats of tennis having won a record 20 Grand Slam titles. Meanwhile, tennis was not his only passion. He was also a great football fanatic having played the game in his younger days.

He is also a big fan of his hometown club FC Basel. However, at the age of 12 Federer decided to give up on football to focus entirely on tennis.

At the age of 14, he moved to the Swiss National training centre and has never had to look back again as he went on to become one of the best in tennis.

This meant that Federer had to move away from his family and miss out on his life as a normal teenager. However, it is a decision that he never regretted.

Federer to retain No.4 spot

Meanwhile, Federer will retain his No.4 rankings after the ATP decided to suspend all tennis-related activities until June 7 and freeze the rankings due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Swiss maestro had undergone a right-knee surgery last month and was set to miss four months of action as part of the recovery process.

This meant that he would have missed the entire-clay court season and thus experience a slip in his rankings.

However, the coronavirus spread across the world has changed the entire scenario and turned the tide in the Swiss star’s favour. Had the tour carried on, as usual, Federer would have fallen down the rankings after missing out on a number of games.

However, the virus outbreak will allow him to keep his No.4 spot for a while.
