Roger Federer will not be taking part in Rome Masters this year, while also being undecided on a Roland Garros 2021 return.
20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer made a return to professional tennis only last month after a long injury layoff lasting 14 months. Federer made a winning return against Dan Evans at the Qatar Open, only to falter in the next round against Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Portuguese Tennis journalist and commentator Jose Morgado tweeted that Federer isn’t featured in the list of names for Rome Masters. He also added that taking part in Madrid Masters and Roland Garros might be the Swiss’s plan.
Morgado tweeted:
“Federer isn’t in Rome’s list. Madrid and Roland Garros looking like his plan for the clay season.”
After a while Morgado further revealed that the 39-year old might skip both Madrid and Geneva Masters, in order to be fit for the Roland Garros.
Here is what Morgado tweeted :
“Madrid week off Geneva week off Roland Garros Looks like a good plan too.”
Roger Federer’s has had very little success in the Roland Garros
Even if Federer gets back to full fitness, he will have to shake off the rust, due to his 14 month absence. His last grand slam appearance came at the 2020 Australian Open.
Federer went all the way to the semi-finals only to be beaten by Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The Swiss Maestro had suffered a groin injury early on in the tournament, as well. And, in the next month he underwent a surgery on his right knee.
Just, when he decided to make a return, he suffered a setback in the initial rehabilitation, forcing him to pull out of his beloved Wimbledon. 14 months later, Federer is all set to go.
King Roger is in the twilight of his career, and Roland Garros is a tournament he has had very little success. He has just won it once in 2009 when ‘The King of Clay’ was shocked by a defiant Robin Soderling.
With all said and done, Federer would be hoping to have one last go at the Roland Garros if he manages to get tournament fit in time.
