The 2022 Rotterdam open was won by Felix Auger-Aliassime after he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals
Félix Auger-Aliassime came out victorious and was crowned the champion after he overcame the favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2022 Rotterdam Open. The win was Félix’s inaugural ATP tour title. After eight runner-up finishes in prior tournaments, he was finally able to win the trophy.
The young lad from Canada won his maiden major tournament in his still-young career after beating the Greek man Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets of 6-4,6-2. The 21-year old dominated the whole game and became the underdog who overcame tough challenges.
The win came as a relief for the young man after a series of losses in eight finals. The Canadian was all giddy after winning the title and took to Twitter to express his happiness. He posted a series of pictures and a heartfelt note. He wrote, “First ATP Title. The smile on my face says it all. I’ve felt every emotion on the road here and after today I couldn’t be more focused on all that I envision for my future.” He continued, “Rotterdam is and will always be a special place in my career so I hope to be back for many years to come. Thank you all and let’s go for more”
During an on-court post-match interview, he said, “It’s been not the smoothest road since my first final three years ago. It’s been an amazing day for me to get this first title and especially here, (where) I’ve done my first ATP main draw a couple of years ago so I guess it’s right that I get my first ATP title here.”Thank you for making it a special week that I will remember for the rest of my life. It’s the happiest day of my career and hopefully, this is the first of many to come.”
The underdog goes home with the title; Social Media going crazy for Quebec’s own
The 21-year old hailing from both Togo and Canadian origin won his first singles trophy after winning the Paris Masters Double in 2020 and ATP Cup Team Competition title with Denis Shapovalov in January 2022.
The 2022 Rotterdam open final was dominated by the Canadian where he served seven aces and won 73 per cent of his first serves. He also broke Tsitsipas’s serve three times. After the win, Tennis Canada’s Vice President said, “They’re creating the taste for kids to step on the court and pick up a racket.” He continued, “That’s our mission. We want to develop the game in Canada through those kids doing well on the international scene we can do that.”
The guy from Quebec would now be joining the names of Leylah Annie Fernandez as champion. These two players along with the names of Bianca Andreescu, Vasek Pospisil, and Milos Raonic would now serve as inspirations for young tennis players.
