The 32-year-old Sabine Lisicki has finally made a comeback after enduring a devastating knee injury back in 2020.
The German star suffered an ACL tear in November 2020 while at the Linz tournament. She made her impending comeback in May at minor clay-court events. She looked good on grass as she made it to the quarterfinals in Bad Homburg before losing to Caroline Garcia.
Now she is competing in the German Open where she managed to win both her qualifying matches against Stefanie Vogele and Kateryna Brandl. Now she will take on the Serbian Aleksandra Krunic in the Round of 32.
Lisicki recently named a couple of people and their comeback stories which inspired her to recover following the injury.
“Lindsey Vonn was a very important and inspiring person.” – Sabine Lisicki
Lindsey Vonn is a former World Cup alpine ski racer on the US Ski Team. The 37-year-old won four World Cup overall championships.
“Lindsey Vonn was a very important and inspiring person. We didn’t know each other personally before, but she got in touch with me when I broke everything in my knee that can be broken,” Lisicki told Spox. “She had a very serious knee injury herself, and when you have someone like that and you can ask for advice, that’s a great support.”
Another legend who inspired Lisicki was the 3-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray. Lisicki saw the documentary of Murray recovering from hip surgery and eventually making a comeback and hailed his “passion” for the game of tennis.
“He made it back with a [reconstructed] hip and is playing really good tennis again,” she said. “My injury was also so bad that 99.9 percent of the time you wouldn’t return to professional sports, so Andy’s story is very inspiring.”
