Nick Kyrgios played a solid match to defeat good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis in round one of the US Open 6-3, 6-4, 7-6
Nick Kyrgios got the better of a good friend and doubles Thanasi Kokkinakis to advance to the second round of the US Open. The two-hour match was a very good one as the good friends delivered a proper show.
Both Kyrgios and Kokkinakis played well in this match but the higher-ranked Aussie was simply better when it mattered more. Kyrgios, the no.23 seed will now take on Benjamin Bonzi in the next round at the Flushing Meadows.
After the match, Kyrgios said that he never wants to face Kokkinakis again but sounded quite excited about partnering his Aussie teammate in the men’s doubles at the US Open. While talking about his win, he added, “To play one of probably my best friends after Serena’s last match, with a record-breaking attendance, it’s insane. A night I’m never going to forget. My 200th win as well. A couple accolades today. It was good.”
We will see Kyrgios and Kokkinakis playing with each other in the doubles tomorrow against Musetti and Gaston.
Fans react to Kyrgios’ win over Kokkinakis
Good wishes poured in on Twitter for Nicky Kyrgios after his victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis. Let us take a look at some of the reactions.
“Fantastic congrats ! Aussie Aussie Aussie all the way , how cool is it playing with your mate dreams do come true! Well done”, wrote a fan.
“Sad that best friends had to do this but kudos on the win”, another fan tweeted.
“Watched only parts of the last set. The new coaching rule should prohibit players to respond to their box. Nick’s constant nagging is VERY annoying and unfair to the other players”, read another tweet.
Another fan tweeted, “Stupid idea of the bracket/schedule organizer to pit two doubles teammates from the same country against each other. They don’t want to. Fans not into it (lifeless). Do better next time.”
