Shelby Rogers defeated Parrizas-Dias 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 in a match that lasted almost 3 hours
Shelby Rogers held her nerves to pull off an incredible win in the third set tie-break against Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. The intensely fought match between the two players lasted 2 hours and 49 minutes, taking the audience on a roller-coaster ride.
Rogers brushed aside Parrizas-Dias in the first set with ease but the Spaniard came out stronger in the second one to level the match 1-1. Both players didn’t leave an inch to one another in the third set which eventually saw the American, Shelby Rogers use all of her experience to come out on top in the tie-breaker to eventually clinch the set and the match.
Rogers and Parrizas-Dias are evenly matched in terms of their WTA rankings with hardly anything to separate them and it is evident in the match result. The American is currently ranked No. 46 in the world while the Spaniard occupies the 45th spot. Shelby Rogers is now set to face Jelena Ostapenko in the next round. Ostapenko is the 10th seed in the tournament and it will be a tough challenge for Rogers to get past the Latvian. Rogers lost to Ostapenko last year in the same tournament in the quarter-finals.
Rogers and Parrizas-Dias treated the fans with a wonderful match and the excitement on social media was quite understandable. 3 hours of high intensity, top class tennis – the fans definitely liked every bit of it. “This was my favourite match of the day! Shelby Rogers my word!”; “Parrizas-Dias is new to this kind of pressure and is on an upward direction in the right trajectory. I’ll continue watching and supporting her”, fans wrote on Twitter.
In the other notable women’s matches of the day, Naomi Osaka got the better of Sloane Stephens in three sets while Amanda Anisimova beat fellow American Emma Navarro and Marie Bouzkova eased past China’s Wang Qiang.
Meanwhile, Shelby Rogers will be looking to make this good start count. Rogers has already played four previous tournaments this season but there haven’t been any notable performances so far. She started the year well by making it to the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International but then made first-round exits in all of her next three tournaments including the Australian Open. Now that Rogers has gone past the first round at the Indian Wells she will be looking to continue the run and make it big.
