Tournament 6th seed Sloane Stephens will be up against the unseeded Czech Marie Bouzkova in the final of this ATP 250 event
Sloane Stephens advanced to the final after her opponent Anna Kalinskaya retired mid-way through the tie. The Russian won the first set and lost the next one. Before the beginning of the third set, Kalinskaya had to withdraw owing to an injury. Stephens won by walkover 3-6, 7-5 and advanced to the final.
Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova has had an amazing run so far at the tournament. The 23 year-old defeated China’s Wang Qiang in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the final. She caused a major upset in the quarter finals. The unseeded Czech defeated third seed Sara Sorribes Tormo in emphatic fashion 6-4, 6-1 to qualify to the semis.
Both players are all set for the final showdown
Marie Bouzkova has been quite a surprise package so far. She has caused upsets in both her quarter final and semi final matches to reach this far. The 2014 US Open Junior singles champion is now on the brink of winning her maiden WTA singles title.
She has made it to the finals of WTA events twice before but finished as runners up on both occasions. She lost the final at Monterrey in 2020 and at the Phillip Island trophy in Melbourne in 2021. All three of her finals have come so far on hard court, which evidently proves she is going to be a really challenging prospect in the final at Guadalajara.
Sloane Stephens is the favourite going into the final. The 6th seed is an established player in the WTA circuit. The former US Open champion is a seasoned campaigner. This is the 10th WTA career Singles final for Stephens. She has gone through a drought over the past few years.
This is her first WTA event final since 2018. Stephens will be aiming for her 7th career title. She has lost her last three finals and will be aiming to turn things around this time. The current World No. 57 is set to break into the top 50 of women’s tennis with this appearance in the final.
Will unseeded Bouzkova win her maiden title or will the favourite, Stephens break her drought in the finals and bring home her 7th title?
Estadio Akron de Tenis in Guadalajara will have the answers in few hours’ time.
