Former US Open Champion Emma Raducanu is currently ranked World No. 80 in WTA singles – she was awarded a wildcard entry recently.
British number one Emma Raducanu has been awarded a wildcard entry to the Indian Wells Open, scheduled to take place next month.
Raducanu missed the cut-off for automatic qualification as she has slipped to No. 80 in the rankings. She was last seen in action on the WTA tour in the second round of the Australian Open, where she lost to Coco Gauff.
Raducanu has had a dramatic drop in rankings over the past year. In 2022, she achieved her highest ranking of World No. 10 but has now dropped to 80 in a span of only six months.
She hasn’t had a good start to this year either and has failed to impress. The ASB classic was her first tournament of 2023, where she gave a walkover in the second round itself and then suffered another second-round exit in the Australian Open.
Let us take a look at some of the reactions from fans on social media.
“I’m not a particularly big fan of her, but this is a no-brainer. Emma brings more fans than I’d say all but maybe 5-10 women. She’s good enough to hold her own. At worst, she’ll go out in the first or second rounds after tight matches. At best she’ll make a deep run. Honestly, if I ran any tournament, I’d grant her a WC just because of her popularity”, wrote a fan.
“So another one match tournament?”, trolled another fan.
“From GS winner to receiving a WC for a Masters… This story is really sad”, read a tweet.
“I hope she can have a deep run. She’s good for the game”, commented another fan.
Another fan wrote: “She probably would have got in anyway. Only 3 places below the cut-off (with inevitable dropouts to come) + qualifying if needed.”
