“I really miss the team spirit” – Stefanos Tsitsipas shares what playing for Team Greece at Davis Cup means to him

World No.6 Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently the youngest player inside the top-ten ATP rankings

Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas claimed that playing in Davis Cup with the national team was phenomenal due to several reasons.

Tsitsipas is the current World No.6 and is the youngest player to be ranked inside the top-ten category according to the ATP rankings.

Tsitsipas is also a member of the famed ‘Next Gen’ stars that also includes German Alexander Zverev and Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Tsitsipas is currently in Manila for his national side Greece’s Davis Cup tie against the Philippines. The Greek star was in conversation with the media and was speaking on a wide range of topics:

“Davis Cup is an event that’s been on my bucket list to play and I’m looking forward to playing this rubber and trying to represent Greece as best as possible,” said Tsitsipas.

“I’m really committed to play for the country. I’ve been playing individually all my life and I really miss the team spirit and playing for the team and not just for myself. It kind of sort of give something extra out there, especially the memories that I get to share with my teammates.”

“It’s just phenomenal to be able to share with someone else and not just myself,” Tsitsipas concluded.

He reached the finals of the ATP 500 event but missed out on the title after losing to Novak Djokovic.

Davis Cup matches kick off from Friday

Greece will take on the Philippines in the Davis Cup World Group II playoffs at the Philippine Columbian Association from Friday.

The team draw is on Thursday while the first two singles matches will be played on Friday. The doubles and the reverse two singles, on the other hand, will start on Saturday.

Stefanos will be accompanied by brother Petros Tsitsipas, Michail Pervolarakis and Markos Kalovelonis, while Dimitris Chatzinikolaou has been handed the team captain’s responsibilities.

The young Tsitsipas debuted in the Davis Cup last year and steered Greece from Group III to Group II.

The Philippines side comprises of Ruben Gonzales, Jeson Patrombon, AJ Lim, Francis Casey Alcantara, and Eric Olivarez Jr.
