Stefanos Tsitsipas has denied claims of sacking his father in the aftermath of the Australian Open controversy
World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas has addressed rumours of sacking his father, Apostolos after the Australian Open in Melbourne.
The claim arose after the Greek player revealed that former player Thomas Enqvist had joined his coaching team. He said: (h/t Tennis365)
“Enqvist has a lot of experience on the tour and I respect him a lot. The reason Thomas is here is to help me, give me another perspective and give me some ideas,”
“Enqvist is an addition to my team.”
Apostolos Tsitsipas sparked a controversy in the semi-final against Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev was visibly angry accusing Tsitsipas’ father of coaching him from his box in Greek. This prompted Greek official Eva Asderaki-Moore to stand near the box to avoid any hindrance to play.
Tsitsipas teamed up with Enqvist during the ongoing ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, where he is the top-seeded player. Tsitsipas is aiming an eighth ATP Tour title in the Netherlands, before heading to the United States for the ATP 1000 events.
Is 2022 the year for Tsitsipas’ maiden Grand Slam?
Tsitsipas has been close to winning a Grand Slam, but he stumbled at the final hurdle. He reached the final of the 2021 French Open, eventually losing to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
The Greek supremo has been impressive throughout the last 3 seasons. He has racked up some impressive wins against the best in the world, while improving his consistency. His most impressive win came at the Nitto 2020 ATP Finals, in his debut campaign.
The future is bright for the Greek star, with him just getting his career started.
