Simona Halep suffered a huge upset as she lost in her opening match of the 2022 US Open to Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur 2-6, 6-0, 4-6.
Is Daria Snigur the Emma Raducanu of US Open 2021? Well, it’s too early to make that claim but defeating a 2-time Grand Slam champion in the first round is certainly not a bad way to get things started.
The Russian veteran Halep recently won the Canadian Open and jumped eight spots from No. 15 to No. 7. However, her start to the match against Snigur wasn’t too convincing.
The 20-year-old won the first set with ease before Halep came back strongly to win the second. It all boiled down to the third set where Snigur held her nerves to pick up the biggest victory in her young career.
After winning the match, the youngster failed to hold back her tears of joy while the fans in attendance gave her a huge ovation.
Snigur qualified for the main draw after winning her matches against Tessah Andrianjafitrimo, Yanina Wickmayer, and Nao Hibino. The World No. 124 will now take on Canada’s Rebecca Marino in the second round.
Tennis fans on Twitter hailed Ukrainian Daria Snigur for her performance against Simona Halep. Many fans also praised her for bringing joy to the people of Ukraine who are going through a difficult time owing to Russia’s invasion.
