Tennys Sandgren reacts to being called a racist by fans during Citi Open
American tennis player Tennys Sandgren has had his say about the controversy with fans after being called racist at the Citi Open.
Sandgren was facing Lloyd Harris in a Round of 32 match, when he retired from the match 4-6, 0-1 against the South African.
The highlight of the match came when fans were booing the American, while one deemed him to be a “racist.”
The player has reacted to a tweet with an ‘xD’ emoji after fans were removed from the stadium.
The home favourite has had his fair share of controversy in recent years and did not take much into this matter on Twitter. The World No. 83 is in Washington to prepare for the final Grand Slam of the year, US Open.
His most famous run came at the 2019 Australian Open, where he reached the quarter-finals. His loss to Roger Federer came in 5 sets, having 7 match points over the Swiss. Since then, Sandgren’s game has not improved much as he fell out of the Top 50.
Sandgren has been in the spotlight before
The polarising political views of the American were a topic of debate in 2018, when he was seen supporting a right-wing movement on Twitter.
A 2012 tweet also resurfaced, in which Sangren appears to call Williams “disgusting” during a match on Twitter put him in hot water. It was interpreted as a racist comment about the American’s body or skin colour.
Sandgren has had big wins in the past, but has been off the grid in recent times. With the US Open expecting full capacity, will he be cheered on by his home fans? We will wait and see how the seasons pans out.
