Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis continued their dream run in the 2022 Australian Open
The Australian pairing of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis continued to defy the odds at the 2022 Australian Open.
The pair were handed Wild Card entries for the men’s doubles tournament, and not many would have predicted what was to follow.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis reached the finals of the first Grand Slam of 2022, and it was a crazy ride all the way.
Kyrgios is known for being exuberant on the court and he is a bit of a hot-head. However, the pairing seem to be doing extremely well and recently knocked out the no.3 seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
The Australian pair also knocked out the no.6 seeds in the quarterfinals and they will go up against another all-Australian pairing.
While Kyrgios and Kokkinakis dream of the final, they were ecstatic after the win. Kokkinakis also had one word to say regarding the celebrations.
The fairytale has been going strong for the Aussie pair but they don’t have Grand Slam finals experience.
Kyrgios’ best doubles Grand Slam performance, prior to this, has been a third round finish in the French and US Open, once.
As for Kokkinakis, the 25-year-old has reached the third round of a doubles Grand Slam just once, and that came in the 2015 Wimbledon.
Their opposition though has better records to go with. Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden are also unranked in the tournament, but Ebden did win the 2013 Mixed doubles Australian Open.
Purcell, for his part, has never won a Grand Slam doubles title. But, the Australian has reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 US Open and also reached the skies of the same tournament but in the Mixed doubles bracket.
Whatever happens, it will be a fun men’s doubles finals and there could be some fireworks from the World Cards Kokkinakis and Kyrgios.
