Novak Djokovic returned to the No.1 spot in the ATP rankings after Carlos Alcaraz lost in the semi-finals of the Indian Wells

Novak Djokovic has reclaimed his No.1 spot in the ATP men’s singles rankings after Carlos Alcaraz lost to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the Miami Open. Earlier in March, Djokovic lost the top spot to Alcaraz after the Spanish teenager clinched the title at the Indian Wells. Djokovic recently surpassed Stefanie Graf’s mark of 377 weeks as World No. 1, which had been a record for men and women and is all set to add to his tenure.

It is astonishing that Djokovic has claimed back the No.1 spot despite missing multiple tournaments since the start of 2022. Djokovic potentially lost a total of 12,000 points after not being able to participate in key tournaments such as the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami Open, Wimbledon (no points awarded), Montreal Open, Cincinnati Masters and the US Open in 2022. The Serbian has also missed the Masters 1000 events like the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open this year.

Fans react as Novak Djokovic reclaims his throne

Let us take a look at some of the reactions from fans on social media.

“Insane! But AO 2022, IW & Miami 2022 don’t count anymore, so technically, it’s 8000 potential points as of now, but it is still insane”, wrote a fan.

“You shouldn’t count tournaments that took place more than 12 months ago in this context. The first three of 2022 wouldn’t count for the rankings now anyway”, another fan correctly pointed out.

“That’s the reason why he is a goat”, tweeted another fan.

“It is incredible that he is number one playing part time”, tweeted another fan.

Another fan wrote: “Let’s not forget his Wimbledon 2020. He won in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022! Easily another 2,000 pts back then.”
