Rafael Nadal shares his training regime during the lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus crisis

World No.2 Rafael Nadal confirmed that he had taken a cautious approach to his training routines whilst under lockdown.

The suspension of all games and Tours by the ATP due to the coronavirus had restricted many, including Nadal, to their respective houses earlier.

However, with the restrictions now eased and the deconfinement phase in action in many parts of the world, Nadal and his peers are now preparing to get back to full fitness when tennis resumes.

“I feel good. Like everyone, I couldn’t go out for two months. Luckily, I received weight machines at home to work out a bit and keep myself physically fit,” Nadal revealed during an interview with Stade 2.

“Little by little, I resumed training a few days a week, but not seven days a week. It was a gradual, very slow recovery with great care and caution.”

Nadal had spent his time during the lockdown at his home in native Mallorca in Spain and had a few days ago announced that his Rafa Nadal Academy was once again open for training.

Nadal still unsure when tennis will resume

A sceptic Nadal, however, revealed that despite the restrictions being taken off in many parts including Spain, he was unsure when tennis would make a return to action.

“The goal is to be ready for the day when we are going to play tennis again, but that we do not yet know,” the Spaniard said.

The 12-time winner of the French Open also confirmed his participation at this year’s French Open which will take place in September.

The French Tennis Federation had earlier taken the unilateral decision to postpone the French Open 2020 from its original date in May to the last week of September in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I don’t see the future from a professional point of view. But I see it rather from a medical, health point of view. If we can play in optimal conditions and in complete safety, if everyone can participate, if all that is together, yes I will be there,” the ‘King of Clay’ confirmed.

Nadal concluded by saying that the health and safety concerns of everyone involved should be taken with proper care before organising the tournament.
