Elena Rybakina shocked the world when she won the women’s singles event at the Wimbledon Championships last month.
She became the first player representing Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam singles title after defeating world No. 2 – Ons Jabeur in the final.
Rybakina dropped just two sets during her campaign at the All England Club this year. She became the youngest woman to win the Wimbledon title since Petra Kvitova achieved the feat in 2011.
Rybakina played her first match since winning the Wimbledon title but the result wasn’t one she would like to remember going forward. The 23-year-old lost in her first match of the Silicon Valley Classic against the Russian No. 1 player – Daria Kasatkina. The 2022 French Open semifinalist looked completely out of sorts in the early goings of the match. She lost the first set but displayed great vigor to win the next two sets in a canter with a match ending 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Kasatkina will face American qualifier Taylor Townsend in the Round of 16. The match is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
