Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas’ name is often incorrectly pronounced by experts and fans across the world
Stefanos Tsitsipas seems to be tired of hearing his name being pronounced incorrectly by almost everyone he comes across. The Greek star took to Twitter to vent out his frustration, writing – “I wasted half of my life telling people how to pronounce my name.” Interestingly, he landed on a list of the most mispronounced words in 2021 in a list compiled by the US Captioning Company and commissioned by language-learning platform Babbel.
While many people will feel daunted by, it’s important not to take pronouncing “Stefanos” for granted, because it’s not quite as easy as it seems. For Stefanos, put the accent on the “fa,” which may not be the most intuitive way people would approach the name. So, it’s Stefanos. For the more trying last name Tsitsipas, the beginning is ‘tsi’ then repeated, before adding a “pass” with a long “a” at the end. However, you can probably get by with saying “sit-see-pahss” around most Americans with them never knowing the better.
Most fans could totally related to Tsitsipas’ struggles. Let us take a look at some of the reactions.
“I know how you feel… my full name isn’t too easy either.. yours is so simple in comparison”, wrote a fan.
“It’s Actually Simple. Name as it is and surname Just don’t pronounce both T’s”, another fan explained.
“and the other half thinking about me? you’re so romantic babe”, joked another fan.
“I legit had to google it the first time I saw you play”, read another tweet.
“I have never related to one of his tweets more”, tweeted another fan.
