Sofia Kenin has had a huge dip in form and injuries have also halted her progress as of late.
The 23-year-old American had a spectacular 2020 as she won the Australian Open and reached the finals of the French Open. However, the ride has not been a smooth one for her since then.
Kenin became the world No. 4 back in 2020. Two years later, she finds herself languishing at No. 419. She suffered an injury and withdrew from all the major tournaments from March to June this year after the Indian Wells Masters. That also included the French Open and Wimbledon Grand Slams.
The 2018 Fed Cup finalist played an exhibition match against Coco Gauff on Monday at the Atlantic Station. Gauff won the match comprehensively in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
After the loss, Kenin said: “Unfortunate to have that injury, but I’m glad to be back, and it was a fun match, Coco,” Kenin said. “And, yeah, I mean, I’m glad to have been here. I love the crowd and the support and, yeah, I mean, I’m super excited to be back, grateful. You know, I’m just thankful for a lot of things. Because like, you know, like you said, I was in a cast and now I’m playing so, you know, I’m just thankful.”
The American tennis pro played a rally with a ball kid but eventually ended up mishitting a backhand shot which went wide.
