Iga Swiatek crashed out of the French Open 2021 quarter-finals recently
Swiatek, the favourite to win the 2021 French Open, and the defending champion crashed out of the quarter-finals of the tournament. She was beaten by 17th seed Maria Sakkari in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
The Pole was the clear favourite following the recent ousting of Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin and a few other top stars. The strong favourite- Naomi Osaka had already pulled out of the French Open after ‘the media and press’ fiasco.
Following Swiatek’s loss, no women left in the Roland Garros are from the top 15, with Maria Sakkari being the highest seed remaining.
Swiatek’s loss also means that there will be a new women’s title winner at the French Open.
Of late, women’s tennis has seen new winners at every Grand Slam year after year. Gone are the days of the top 5 seeds dominating the Grand Slam.
Twitterati weren’t particularly happy to see another top seed leaving. They made their opinions known:
A few tweeted in support of the 2020 French Open Champion:
With her upset win over Iga Swiatek, Maria Sakkari created history by becoming the first ever Greek woman to reach the semi-finals of a major.
Sakkari will now be facing Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic in the semi-finals.
If she beats the Czech, she will be facing the winner of the other semi-final between Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Tamara Zidansek.
The semi-finals will be held on the 10th of June at the Philippe-Chartrier Court.
