The World No. 40 Alize Cornet will be taking on the World No. 19 Danielle Collins in what promises to be a riveting contest in the third round of the US Open.
The Frenchwoman performed well at the Australian Open and reached her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final. She also made it to the semifinals at the Bad Homburg Open and the Tennis in the Land Tournament. At Wimbledon, Cornet stunned World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and ended her 37-game winning streak. However, Cornet’s season can be termed average as she exited in the first rounds in several tournaments.
The 32-year-old made the headlines with her first win at this year’s US Open. It came against the defending champion Emma Raducanu. Cornet defeated the 19-year-old in straight sets. In the second round, Cornet faced Katerina Siniakova and won the match 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
The American tennis pro made it to the finals of the Australian Open before losing to Ashleigh Barty. Her best result since then has been reaching the Miami Open quarterfinal, where she faced defeat against 4-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.
The 28-year-old avenged her loss in the first round of the US Open as she defeated the Japanese star in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. In the second round, she defeated the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa 6-2, 7-5 with relative ease.
The duo has met each other on only one prior occasion. It was at the 2022 Australian Open when Collins got the better of Cornet.
Prediction: Danielle Collins to win in three sets.
