The 9th-seeded Andrey Rublev will lock horns with the Canadian 19th-seeded Denis Shapovalov in the third round of the US Open on Saturday.
The Russian tennis pro began the year with a bang. He won the Open 13 in Marseille followed by the Dubai Tennis Championships. His third title came at the Serbia Open where he defeated the legendary Novak Djokovic in the final. However, his recent form has not been that great. He reached the semifinals at the Citi Open but lost in the round of 32 in Montreal. At the recently concluded Cincinnati Masters, Rublev lost to Taylor Fritz in the round of 16.
So far at the US Open, Rublev has won two matches in contrasting manners. While he had to dig deep to get the better of Laslo Djere in the first round, his second-round win against Kwon Soon-woo was much more convincing.
Shapovalov has not been at his best this season. He has lost 18 out of the 39 matches he has played in 2022. His most notable results have been reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Like Rublev, Shapovalov was also ousted in the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters.
The 23-year-old won his first-round match in five sets against Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler at the US Open. In the second round, Shapovalov faced Roberto Carballes Baena and defeated the Spaniard in four sets.
Rublev and Shapovalov have faced each other 4 times and share the spoils at 2-2.
Prediction: Andrey Rublev to win in four sets.
