Emilio Nava will take on former champion Andy Murray in the second round of US Open 2022
Andy Murray was on the court for close to three hours as he clinched a 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 victory over his seeded Argentine opponent in the first round. While Murray lost his serve in the very first game of the match, he bounced back with successive breaks and a 5-3 lead. Unable to hold on to win the set Murray then broke in the 12th game to finally carve out the first set.
He continued to take command of the encounter with back-to-back breaks and a 5-0 lead. Murray lost serve once after that, only to claim a 2-0 lead off the next time he served. The third set began similarly with Murray getting an early break and merging it with a second that took him to a 5-1 lead. And while the Briton dropped his serve again, he clinched his second-round berth with an easy victory.
Emilio Nava’s form coming into the match
Emilio Nava caused an upset in the first round against higher-ranked John Millman. Nava won 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 to set up this second-round meeting set up with Murray. After saving a set-point in the 12th game of the opening set, Nava had four opportunities to claim it in the tie-breaker, winning it 9-7. One break of serve is all that Millman needed to level things out but Nava then overcame a frittered set-point in the 12th game of the third to retake the lead in the tie-breaker.
Two breaks of service allowed Millman a second equaliser in the encounter but Nava was back at it again as he ran off to a match win with a 6-1 score line in the final set.
